Brody Neuenschwander

Brody Neuenschwander is a calligrapher and text artist working in a variety of media, from paper, canvas and parchment to glass, textiles, laser cut metal and other materials. He also works for film, opera and performance pieces.  Neuenschwander has collaborated for thirty years with British filmmaker Peter Greenaway, doing calligraphy for the films Prospero's Books and The Pillow Book, the operas Writing to Vermeer and Columbus, and the sound and light installation Bologna Towers 2000.  Clients include the US, British and Belgian governments, fashion designer Dries Van Noten, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Jewish Museum in Berlin and many private collectors.  He is currently making a three-part documentary on the history and future of writing for the BBC, Arte and Nova Television. The series is global in its reach, covering the origins of writing in Egypt, Sumer, China and Central America; the development of the great calligraphic traditions in Europe, the Islamic world and China and the influence of digital technology on our traditions and practice of writing and communicating.
